It is true that when the State of Virginia adopted the Ordinance of Secession in 1861 petitioner was compelled to submit to the authorities which exercised control on his locality and who had power to enforce their mandates but petitioner gave no voluntary and or support to the so called confederate government.

- Petitioner was not Educated at West Point or any other public School of the United States and has held no office or employment under the so called confederate government or the State of Virginia Except that of a justice of the peace in his county the Duties of Which office are entirely local in their character.

- Petitioner was not in the Army of the so called confederate government, but exempt as a justice of the peace from Conscription and also having no inclination to engage in a revolution which he Denounced as unlawful and treasonable.

- He has taken the Amnesty Oath, a copy of which is herewith posted signed by petitioner as a part of this petition. He Desires to have the life of a gentle and peaceful citizen of the United States in accordance to the Constitution and the laws.

- No proceedings have been instituted against petitioner under the Confiscation Laws of the United States. He herefore pleas this his petition for a Special pardon so that he may be restored to his rights of person and property heretofore Enjoyed by him.
